For generations, Scranton’s claim to fame was its thriving iron and steel industry. The early growth of our city led to a booming multicultural population. However, after WWII, the decline of the local mining industry caused a widespread decline in many of the neighborhoods. Since the 1980s, there has been a powerful push to revive the city. Nowadays, Scranton has plenty of amazing attractions and vibrant commercial districts! All around the Lackawanna County Courthouse Square in downtown Scranton (an awesome family-friendly area!), there are historic and contemporary monuments, trendy cafes, lively bars, art galleries and boutique shopping.
A popular paranormal activity is the Scranton Ghost Walk, which operates daily throughout the year. History buffs and train enthusiasts are encouraged to pay a visit to the Steamtown National Historic Site and the Electric City Trolley Museum, where you’ll become acquainted with the city’s railroad history. The Radisson Station Hotel is another worthwhile stop on the railroad-history route, as it was repurposed from a grand train station. Top off your visit to local heritage sites with a tour through the historic Iron Furnaces.
To view the natural scenery of the greater Scranton area, you can walk or bike the trails of the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail that winds near the river. These outdoor paths connect up with other parts of a 70-mile trail through the city. On hot summer days, head to Nay Aug Park, Scranton’s largest park that features a pool and shaded playground units. When the winter chill sets in, the Montage Mountain ski resort is another popular destination.
Whatever attractions you choose to visit, moving around Scranton is easy, with a comprehensive bus system run by of the County of Lackawanna Transit System (COLTS).
